Industry changes

There's a lot of chatter these days in the publishing industry, and most of it is not good. I'll just give you the roundabout, as most of this stuff is 'inside baseball' to readers. But any writers/authors/publishers swinging by here might be curious.

1) There're a lot of problems with reviews these days. Amazon and even Smashwords have reported scams involving companies soliciting fake reviews for authors. If you the author get caught, I hear they'll drop your books. Smashwords authors have been getting promotion solicitations in their review sections. The NYT had to pull a book from its Bestsellers list because it was gamed by the publisher or other shady fellas. You can get the 411 here

Long story short, I think that quite a few "best sellers" may be anything but. Going forward, I can only really focus on how to improve my numbers and get as many superfans that I can.

2) Barnes & Noble has cut hardcore erotica from their collection, including necro stuff and pedo stuff. They're also cutting out hate speech and calls to real-life violence, essentially. I tend to skirt the line a bit on violence, so I must be careful going forward least my Darfur 3 Saga stories wind up on the cutting block. Does that mean self-censorship? Well, I wasn't planning on anything that they wouldn't want adult readers to read anyway, but these days, even a minor mistake can have harsh consequences.

I feel like I'll be OK, but my plans for Cutthroat Rimworld Rape Pirates are off the table.

3) Smashwords released a survey recently, talking about the top selling genres. Of course Romance is #1, but Fantasy is #3, Sci-fi #5, Horror #10 and  African American Fiction is at #13.out of #17. Comedy is #17, which is a shame. In Non-fiction, Travel books are #11 in sales, so if I write in that genre, I shouldn't expect a best-seller, unless I write the most kick-ass travelogue ever.

The big sellers are also doing box-sets, so when I have 4 books in the Darfur 3 series ready to go, I'll make a box set. Gotta have a set to do a box set, after all.

Fall plans

I've got quite a few projects on my mind, but I'm mainly focused on the big book for the rest of summer.

I'm making pretty good catch up time with Super Prepared. At my current pace of 2 to 3 pages a day, I'll be done writing by September. Editing will be a different story. I'll need to hire out.

What's on my platter for Wattpad? Two stories are bouncing around my head.

1) I call this one Fresh Bite, and it covers the days of three people living in a supernatural world. A human doctor who treats vampires and werewolves because they keep getting sick biting humans. A vampire hunter kicked off the team because of budget cuts and fewer vampires misbehaving (Probably due to above). A part-elf part-werewolf with a human mother who works as a lawyer and is a friend to both. Constantly hassling them is a CIA intel officer who wants the 411 on the paranormal community, as well as bounties. If it sounds like the Canadian TV show Lost Girl, then it shouldn't. I won't have as many obnoxious bar scenes as the show did.

I can start this one after I finish SuperPrepared as a fun time sink.

2)  I've had a big Wattpad project on my mind for awhile, but it will likely be a winter project as I have NaNoWriMo to contend with. I've had a good NaNoWriMo idea bouncing in my head for the past year. Though originally I was going to write that one after SuperWar, it's short enough that I can get it done in a month. I will have to plan it out appropriately. It'll be another videogame fanfic like my Rimworld stories, though I intend to go for a more beloved product this time. Hope I don't get a cease-and-desist order.

Work progress

Writing the current big project Super Prepared has been a bit trickier than I thought, plus with other distractions and side projects, I'm not as far along as I'd like to be. Nonetheless, I've gotten 3 chapters done so far and I might have a fourth done tonight. Just as soon as I finish this post.

This week, I'll be adding a new chapter of The Wind and The Rain, my superhero detective story, on Wattpad. Link's on the main page if you wish to read it.

I've got 3 to 4 more entries left in Diary of a Pirate Boss. This week's workflow is a little hectic with a volunteer project I've got for the next two weeks. So I'll just need to take advantage of any time I've got to write.

A new idea for horror comedy series has entered my head recently. I'm thinking of doing a comedy paranormal series, but only after I finish my current projects.
