The Land remains awesome and wonderful- to read about. Actually living in the Land and especially the Mist Village is a never-ending fight for survival against all manner of monsters. Poor Richter can't even clean up the cellars without an epic battle against good and pure evil. All those game mechanics and powerups he finds become even more important as now it's time to use them on himself, his village, and the combat parties he forms.
Sometimes the plot produces moments to introduce important (to the writer) game mechanics and special plot tokens for future books. I think this might irritate the more knowledgeable reader but fans of the series already know these things.
I've read ahead of books 4 and 5 and thusly know more about the plot and character changes which means I can't give away too many details. So let's just say that Richter's hard work on building the base really gets going in these two books until the pixies show up. Pay careful attention; you can see the Chekov's Guns being placed.
